Dimapur Sumi Students’ Union (DSSU) on Saturday celebrated 50 years of its establishment at Dimapur Sumi Baptist Church with MLA & Advisor, Power, H Tovihoto Ayemi as the special guest. The programme was held under the theme, ‘Defining the Past: Reimagining the Future.’

Addressing the gathering, Tovihoto said 50 years had come of an age when an organization could be called matured enough and show the positive way for other likeminded organizations. He also likened the first 25 years to a period of trials and errors and also an adjustment period where one learns through struggles. Lauding the DSSU for achieving the 50 years milestone, Tovihoto encouraged the Union to continue their tireless works for the welfare of the student community.

The local legislator also urged the gathering to pick positive sides of the current pandemic even as it has brought to a standstill almost all normal human activity. “Pandemic has taught us a lot of lessons; of the things we could have done in the past, of the things we could do and most of all, our capability to face the unforeseen challenges,” he added.

Tovihoto opined that Dimapur being the commercial hub of the state, people inhabiting the city were living in a city of opportunities and urged citizens to grab the opportunity yet remain humble.

Stating that no government would be able to provide jobs to every person, he urged youngsters to develop entrepreneurial mindset. Harping on the 15 road projects that were launched in Kohima on November 4, Tovihoto said many other development projects were in the pipeline. He appealed the people to continue living in a harmonious manner.

During the programme, Executive Secretary of Western Sumi Baptist Aukuhou Kuqhakulu (WSBAK), Rev Dr Phughoto Sema released the jubilee souvenir and said dedicatory prayer.

Jubilee Planning Committee Convenor, Bohoi K Yeptho delivered the welcome address while representatives of Sumi Council Dimapur, Sumi Kiphimi Kuqhakulu and Dimapur Naga Students’ Union also exhorted the gathering.

Prior to the programme, Tovihoto unveiled the jubilee monolith and Senior Pastor, Dimapur Sumi Baptist Church, Rev S Vitoshe Swu pronounced the dedicatory prayer.

During the second session, Youth Secretary, WSBAK, N Suhuto Chishi spoke on the theme.
