Delhi Public School celebrates Annual Sports Day

Delhi Public School, Dimapur, today celebrated its Annual Sports Day 2014, with Geoffrey Yaden, Editor, Nagaland Post, as the Chief Guest.

The nearly 4-hour long programme saw a host of events like athletics, tug-of-war, and, March Past. Besides this, the students also displayed action songs, a drill, yoga, and dances. Some of the dances included Punjabi folk dance, the Mizo traditional Bamboo dance, and the traditional dance of the tea tribes of Assam – the Jhumur dance.

The program began with a welcome address from the Principal of the school, B K Nanda. The Principal in his address called the chief guest a self-made man, and asked students to take inspiration from Yaden. Further, highlighting the importance of sports, Nanda said Sports was considered an extra-curricular activity earlier, but now CBSE has included it as one of the courses.

Yaden in his speech as chief guest highlighted the importance of sports and quipped “we should promote sports.” He urged the parents gathered and the teachers to take children away from ‘wasteful past-times’ like television, computer games, and, internet. The chief guest announced the sports meet closed and further lowered the school flag and handed it over to the school principal.

Students of the school had been divided into 4 houses – namely, Tizu, Dikhu, Zungki, and, Milak – the names being sourced from the major rivers of the state. Milak House was crowned overall champion at the end of the sports meet, while Tizu, Dikhu, and, Zungki, followed with second, third, and, fourth, respectively. Earlier, Tizu House won the March Past competition. Prizes were also awarded to the best male and female athlete. Sashi Pathak was awarded the best girl athlete, while Lamyanba Oinam and Kethoneitso Sekhose were jointly awarded best boy athletes.
