UNION DEFENCE Minister Arackaparambil Kurian Antony today said talks between Delhi and the NSCN (I-M) were progressing smoothly and assured that the Centre is sincere in the negotiations. Arriving at Rangapahar this afternoon, he said the peace process was successful as violence had declined during the period of ceasefire. “We want a peaceful and lasting solution to the Naga issue,” he said.

Antony, winding up his visit to the Northeast in Nagaland after visiting Assam and Arunachal, said the present atmosphere suggests that the peace process has the support of the Nagas. He said the firm and patient conduct of jawans had carried the peace process forward, earning goodwill for the Army and Assam Rifles from the Nagas.

He however evaded a direct question on the proposal of joint defense made by the NSCN (I-M) by saying that the Group of Ministers instituted by the Centre are in serious negotiations with the organization headed by Thuingaleng Muivah.

On factional clashes, he said it was the prerogative of the State Government and the administration to look into such issues
Concerned over Bangladesh and Myanmar providing shelter to armed rebels from the region, he said, “We hope they will take more serious actions.”

Ruling out a Bhutan type of operation in Myanmar, the Defence Minister said India would not interfere in the internal matters of Rangoon.

“With all respect, our relations (with Myanmar) have improved,” he said and added that problems with the military-run country “are less now.”

The Defence Minister said the situation in Manipur is now improving owing to the “continued determination, bravery and hard work” of the jawans, and “the support and cooperation of the local people.”

“Assembly elections are being conducted in Manipur next month and holding of peaceful elections will be a great boost for carrying forward the peace process in the State.”

Antony asked for the support and sympathy of governments, people and the media for army men working in difficult situations.
