Dimapur, April 9 (MExN): Recently elected Dimapur Municipal Council Chairperson Tovihoto Ayemi today offered a thanksgiving service at his residence at Thahekhu Village, Dimapur. After the guests were seated, Rev Phughoto Aye, Director of the Nagaland Development Outreach, took over as Chairman of the programme and invited speakers to deliver their short addresses.
Industries and Commerce Minister Khekiho Zhimomi, when given time to speak, said a democratic process has to be followed to honour the voice of the majority. The government supports the majority’s interest, he said. A great country follows the parliamentary system of governance which is expressed through the voice of the people, he said. The Ghaspani-I representative said the very same democratic process had been followed during the election of the previous Chairman.
He asked public leaders and DMC members to render their service and extend their help when the occasion arises.
Terming Dimapur as a cosmopolitan hub devoid of tribalism, he said only future prospects for the development of the city should be taken into account. Khekiho was hopeful that the DMC team under a new Chairman would deliver the goods to the people.
On behalf of the Chairman of the Democratic Alliance of Nagaland, Dr Hokishe Sema, his son congratulated Tovihoto and voiced Hokishe’s thoughts that partisan politics should be set aside and that all of the civic body’s members should unite for progress to take shape.
President of the Nagaland People’s Front, Dimapur unit, Lepsi Ao said work cannot be done without cooperation, after welcoming all who had gathered on behalf of the Party he belongs to.
The ‘boy’ from Dimapur, the much respected senior citizen of Dimapur, Manik Bhattacharjee said the dream that Dimapur will become a model town not only for the region but for the whole of Asia lives on. Reminiscing on the ‘good old days’, he lamented on the absence of night life in Dimapur and hinted that this could change.
Naga Council President Savi Liegise aptly put the right words together by saying, “We have to work together for development.”
Welcoming his guests, Tovihoto said his being elected as Chairperson was not a victory but the laying of a common platform for working together. He sought the support of like-minded friends. Very little can be achieved if division exists, he said. Common goals can be achieved through unity which in turn fosters an environment of security and prosperity, he said. He solicited help from the public for the DMC to effectively dispel its duties.
Others present included Dimapur Deputy Commissioner KN Ngullie, NPF leaders, public leaders and captains of the business community.
