Development & Human Security: church organizes workshop

Dimapur, January 22 (MExN): Humanity International, in partnership with Nagaland Development Outreach (NBCC), organized a workshop and consultation here today on ‘Development and Human Security: Governance in the interests of the most vulnerable’ at the NDO Hall. Professor Brendan Howe, Chair, Department of International Studies, and Associate Director, Institute of Development and Human Security at the Ewha Womans University, South Korea was the resource person.

The program was chaired by Bokali Mughavi, with invocation by Rev. Kari Longchar.  “Taking up the issue of conflict resolution and advocating the support for the weaker and vulnerable section of people in the society is not a new thing for the church. However, in the process, we can see a lot of church bashing in the media where the church has become a punch bag for many people without realizing that they are part of it (the church),” said Dr. Hukashe Zhimomi, Director of Nagaland Development Outreach (NBCC), while greeting the gathering. “Let the churches be not only a physical blessing but also a social and spiritual blessing,” he added.

Angely Sumi, Director of Humanity International, while reflecting on the hardship and suffering that Nagas had to endure in the last decades due to political reasons, said, “Every Naga has experienced the pain of being a survivor. Thus, we want to make sure that the community understands the need for the rule of law”.

Following a round of introduction of the 30 participants that included a mix of rights activists, social, church and national workers, the resource person, Prof. Howe gave a presentation on governance, human security, human security and development, negative reinforcement, entitlement rights, the responsibility to protect and to provide.  The program ended with participants partaking in a group exercise/workshop involving a game that brought home the point of the consultation.
