The cultivation of Naga Chilli was taken up under Horticulture Technology Mission (HTM) during 2007-2008 with an area of 477.0 hectares in potential districts of the state with an anticipated production of 1908.0 MTs.
During 2008-09, 248.0 hectares area have been earmarked for Naga Chilli (Chudi) cultivation in seven districts of the state- Kohima, Peren, Mon, Phek, Dimapur, Mokokchung and Zunheboto, according to the annual administrative report of the horticulture department tabled at the recently concluded state assembly session. Intensive training programmes are being conducted for the selected districts, the report said adding that the department have documented 25 nos. of germ-plasms of Naga Chilli from various districts of Nagaland.
The department has also set up the first model project for Naga Chilli development at Jalukie, Peren district in collaboration with ITC Spices Ltd and Spices Board of India. Expected yield during 2009 is about 990 metric tones of fresh Naga Chilli in the state, the report said.
Further, in order to protect the biodiversity, the department has registered Geographical Indication of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999 to protect the Naga farmers in the cultivation of Naga Mircha during 2008.
