‘Development of Nagaland in the hand of farmers’

DIMAPUR, APRIL 21 (MExN): Lalhuma IAS, Chief Secretary Nagaland while inaugurating the District Farmers Conference as the Chief Guest on April 19 at State Academy Hall, Kohima highlighted that 12% of the state total budget for 2006-07 was allocated to Agri & Allied departments on account of ‘Year of farmers 2006’.

While deliberating that 70% of the population of Nagaland are engaged in agriculture, he said that the farmers’ community has to be developed to achieve development of the state and further urged the farmers to work harder with sincerity and to opt for organic cultivation stated Gikuto Zhimomi, DAO Kohima in a release.

Stating that development of Nagaland was in the hand of the farmers, Lalhuma urged the farmers to take up bamboo cultivation stated the release. 

Ramakhrishnan, IAS Deputy Commissioner, Kohima while welcoming the participants especially the farming community from the district assured that the District Administration will initiate more activities for the benefit of the farming communities.

Agriculture Production Commissioner, Nagaland Alemtemshi Jamir (IAS) termed ‘Year of farmers 2006’ as ‘Empowering the farmers’ and further highlighted the objectives for declaring 2006 as the year of farmers stated the release.

Jamir while stating that our focus should be towards ‘Vision 2020’ as farming sector in 21st century is based on globalization and liberalization which, he said, ‘affects our life for which the farmers are also a part of it’ stated the release.

He also stressed on the need to identify crops for commercial scale production and urged the farmers to get information from the concerned departments. Vilazhu, Chairman APMC, Kohima noted that the NE Agri Expo 2006 helped APMC to channelize with other state markets. Vilazhu while expressing displeasure of the farming community for not showing sincerity with the APMC programmes challenged the farmers to make ‘Year of farmers 2006’ as fruitful one stated the release.

Methahetuo Chase, farmer representative thanked the government for declaring the year 2006 as the year of farmers and congratulated the Agri & allied departments for the success of the NE Agri Expo 2006. Vote of thanks was pronounced by R.B.Thong (IAS), Commissioner and Secretary, Agriculture Nagaland.

Thong in the plenary session informed that a resolution committee will be set up comprising of district heads in the district stated the release. In the plenary session HoD Agriculture, HoD Horticulture, HoD Soil and Water Conservation, HoD Vety. & Animal Husbandry, HoD Fishery, HoD Irrigation & Flood Control, HoD Forest, HoD Land Resources, HoD Co-operation and HoD Sericulture also presented short speeches stated the release.
