DGP firm in rejecting ‘serious’ allegations

Dimapur, February 27 (MExN): Director General of Police J. Changkija has termed as ‘serious’ the allegations leveled against him by CLP Leader and Congress candidate from 29 Jangpetkong AC I. Imkong. The Congress leader had earlier called for intervention of the Chief Electoral Officer in two incidents of violence that took place yesterday in his constituency where it was alleged that supporters of NPF candidate from 29th Jangpetkong A/C, Dr. I. Longri had attacked INC supporters at Mangkolemba Town using sophisticated weapons like AK-47s, Sten Carbines and hand grenades and that these weapons were reportedly being used from the police Armoury supplied by the DGP Nagaland. Imkong had also alleged that the “DGP had attached to himself 20 personnel of the Police department and these people are being detailed to shoot at INC supporters”.

“I firmly deny all the allegations and wonder from where I. Imkong, a responsible leader in his own right, has obtained this information”, DGP Changkija stated in a rejoinder. The DGP while terming the allegations as very serious in nature stated that such allegations cannot be simply swept under the carpet “and so it must come to a logical conclusion”. The DGP stated that the allegations leveled against him was a direct assault on his integrity and that it had tarnished his image and therefore challenged the accuser to produce concrete proof to substantiate his allegations.

The DGP has also demanded that a High Level Inquiry should be constituted by the appropriate authority to go into the details and facts of the allegation. “If I am proved guilty through this inquiry I will accept whatever penalty is imposed on me. But if I am absolved of these charges the accuser also must be ready to face the penalty for his false accusations”, Changkija stated and affirmed that the due process of law must take its course.

The DGP also made his stand clear that he was a responsible government servant heading the organization entrusted with the maintenance of law and order in the State and that it was his bounden duty to secure the life and property of all the citizens. The DGP also pointed out that since it was election time, the police setup was called upon by the election Commission of India to ensure the conduct of free and fair elections in the State. “I cannot betray the trust and faith reposed on the department by the government and its people”, DGP Changkija stated.
