Dimapur, August 12 (MExN): A three-day orientation training on the School Health & Wellness Programme (SHWP) under Ayushman Bharat was conducted for school principals and Health & Wellness Ambassadors from August 10 to 12 at Hotel East Inn, Dimapur. Organised by the Department of Health & Family Welfare, the training aimed to strengthen health promotion and disease prevention activities across schools.

On the opening day, school principals were oriented on the vision, objectives, and implementation framework of the SHWP. They were sensitized on their leadership role in fostering a supportive school environment and integrating health and wellness activities into regular school life.

The following two days focused on Health & Wellness Ambassadors—comprising two teachers from each school, preferably one male and one female. The training sessions covered the roles and responsibilities of the ambassadors and offered in-depth discussions across 11 thematic modules: growing up healthy, emotional well-being and mental health, interpersonal relationships, values and citizenship, nutrition and healthy diet, prevention of substance abuse, safe and responsible behaviour (including road and internet safety), prevention and management of common ailments, personal hygiene and sanitation, and promotion of gender equality. Interactive activities, practical demonstrations, and group work were conducted to prepare teachers to lead weekly one-hour health sessions for students.

Resource persons emphasized that principals and ambassadors must collaborate to empower students as Health & Wellness Messengers within their homes and communities. They highlighted the importance of convergence between the Health and Education departments, along with establishing referral linkages between schools, nearby Health & Wellness Centres, and Adolescent Friendly Health Clinics.

The training was facilitated by resource persons including Dr. Tinurenla Anichari, Joint Director and SNO-RKSK, NHM; Dr. Oonno Jamir, State Trainer for SHWP Nagaland; Dr. Rupert Peseyie, Joint Director and SNO-NMHP, DHFW; Dr. Bilva Yalie, MO at UPHC Seikhazou; Dr. Longri Kichu, Senior Public Health Consultant; Dr. Kadila A., MO at RBSK Dimapur; and Sudan Sonar, Senior Programme Manager (IT), NHM.

Other officials present during the three-day programme included Dr. Khelito Zhimomi, Joint Director and SPO-RMNCAH+N; Dr. T. Yetovi Tuccu, Chief Medical Officer, Dimapur; Kitsoshi Z. Swu, Senior DEO; Keviseu Zutso; and Mughaho Zhimo, DEO.

The orientation concluded with a call for principals and ambassadors to take collective ownership in transforming schools into centers that nurture physically fit, emotionally balanced, and socially responsible students.
