‘Diabetes one of fastest growing diseases’

  Wokha, November 15 (MExN): Wokha District has observed World Diabetes Day on November 14 at DCs conference hall.   Medical Officer Dr. Moathung Odyuo, MD, District Hospital in his keynote address said that every six seconds one person dies of diabetes and as such it is one of the fastest growing diseases. “People die not because of diabetes but through diabetes complications as diabetes damages the main vital organs of human body and ultimately diabetic patient succumbs to multiple organ failure,” he mentioned.   He said that there are two types of diabetes Type 1 where our body cannot produce enough insulin and Type 2 caused by the ineffective use of our body insulin. By year 2025 India will be known as the Diabetic capital of the World as people are reluctant to go for blood sugar test regularly. He also said that 80% of developing diabetes can be prevented by regular exercise, control of food habits, avoiding stress and living healthy.   Lanusenla Longkumer, SDO (C) graced the programme and exhorted the participants to adopt healthy lifestyles and which include proper diet, regular exercises and encourage the participants to go for regular blood sugar checkups. The SDO (C) thanked the Medical Department for organizing such programme to create awareness and knowledge on staying healthy and safe from diabetes which is becoming one the silent killer disease.   A press note issued by Mhonbeni Ezung, Media Officer, NHM, CMO Office Wokha stated here that the programme was chaired by Dr. Zuben Kikon, Dy Chief Medical Officer and he said that the main objective of observance of World Diabetes Day was to create awareness among the community about the causes and adverse/ side effects of Diabetes and also to aware the general public about the availability of testing facilities in Health centres. A screening camp was conducted and a total of 80 persons were screened for blood sugar.
