The bandh in Dimapur called by Public Action Committee (PAC) of the Naga Council Dimapur (NCD) on Monday passed peacefully without any untoward incident.
“The bandh was never political motivated nor for the interest of any individual but to send a strong message that the public is tired of the unabated multiple taxation, extortions, kidnappings happening in Dimapur,” stated the PAC of the NCD in a press release today while thanking the 19 tribe hohos, frontal organizations, volunteers, churches, police and administration for cooperating with the bandh.
Volunteers were seen at major intersections of the town to monitor the bandh. Besides the existing Tourist Police at major exit and entry points, 20 more Tourist Police personnel reached Dimapur Sunday night to assist the tourists coming in and going out of the State. As notified by the Tourist Police, its personnel were deployed at Dillai Gate, New Field Check Gate, Dimapur Railway Station and Dimapur Airport to assist and escort travelers at various points. Some Tourist Police personnel were also deployed between Kohima and Dimapur near Bamboo Hut restaurant on the highway. Dimapur Nyamo Lotha Road wears a deserted look during the 12-hour bandh called by the Public Action Committee (PAC) under the aegis of Naga Council Dimapur comprising of 19 tribe Hohos and NGOs from 5: 00 am-5: 00 pm on December 10.
Police escort helping the tourist during the bandh. (Morung Photo by Soreishim Mahong)[/caption] Dimapur Police deployed at the Airport were seen assisting travelers to Kohima negotiating with the taxis at the rate of Rs 2000 per vehicle. The travelers were to share the fare amongst themselves.
Taking advantage of minimal vehicular movement, people were seen felling trees on both sides of the road from Green Park Junction till 7th Mile for expansion of road in connection with 4-lane road construction from Purana Bazaar till Chümoukedima.
Though there was no bandh from 6th Mile onwards towards Chümoukedima, business establishments remained closed.
