The Dimapur district administration carried out a demolition drive on February 17, wherein a commercial structure constructed above a drainage at Nymo Lotha road was torn down by the authorities.
According to Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Dimapur, Tinojongshi Chang, the exercise the outcome of the inspection drive carried out on September 2023 to identify major flood-prone areas and exploring ways to improve the drainage system.
At that time, Advisor to the Departments of Urban Development and Municipal Affairs, Zhaleo Rio informed that the district administration was tasked to identify and remove such structures. He added that offenders should be given a timeframe and if they did not comply, the rule of law be applied.
“So accordingly, we issued an eviction notice during October 2023 and some of them (encroachers) had requested time to the structures,” the DC said.
In regard to Saturday’s demolition drive, the main issue with the structure was that its pillars were constructed above the drainage so it had to be removed, Chang added.
The DC also mentioned that further exercises will be carried out in days to come, wherein the authorities have identified 12 locations where encroachment has taken place.
He noted that the authorities hope to complete such actions before the onset of monsoon. At present, some of the affected individuals have gone to court which will have to be sorted out as well, he revealed.
