The blood bank at the District Hospital, Dimapur, requires atleast 40 units of blood daily. The Medical Officer (MO), incharge of the Blood Centre, Dr Rongsen informed that it needs a steady daily flow of approximately 40 units, while he called for greater public participation in blood donation.

“It’s a challenge for all of us. So, I would like to request the general public, those who are healthy to donate blood, to kindly come forward,” commented Dr Rongsen. The occasion was a blood donation camp organised by the State Bank of India’s (SBI) Dimapur Regional office, in collaboration with the Blood Centre on June 21, as part of the SBI’s 70th anniversary celebrations.

He advocated for donating atleast once a year, if not every three months, “So that we can have a steady flow of blood at the blood center.” If health allows, any person between 18 to 65 years of age can donate.

He maintained that blood donation is a safe procedure, and a noble act that can save many lives. Before blood is drawn, he said that health checks are done ensuring the safety of not only the recipient but also the donor’s.

Only those who meet the standard safety and health criteria, physical and psychological, eventually go on to donate. He added, “We check blood pressure, haemoglobin level, body weight (and other basic checks). Only after fulfilling all the criteria, we will accept the blood.” He said that there should be no cause for worry about donating or receiving donated blood in a medical setting.

Hubert Wungshim, Regional Manager, Regional Business Office, SBI, Dimapur, informed that the camp was mobilised on account of the SBI’s 70th anniversary, and in keeping with the SBI’s tradition of organising blood donation camps.

He said, “State Bank of India has a history of organizing blood donation camps, especially during national crises like the COVID-19 pandemic or other disasters. This year is special because we are celebrating the 70th anniversary of SBI, and to mark the occasion, we are holding a nationwide donation camp.” He added that they chose June 21 for the event as it also coincides with International Yoga Day.”

Atleast 21 units were collected during the camp. The donors included SBI employees working in the bank’s Dimapur Region.
