Dimapur, September 27 (MExN): The culmination programme for the ‘Run 4 Green Dimapur’ marathon was held at the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) office on September 27.

The event, aimed at promoting environmental awareness and cleaner air, was organised by the DMC in collaboration with the District Administration, Dimapur Development Authority, Department of Environment and Climate Change, and the Nagaland Pollution Control Board. It was also supported by the National Youth Climate Consortium and partner NGOs, including Team Better Dimapur, Can Youth, and Pro-Rural.

The marathon witnessed a total of 687 participants, 227 in the Open category (164 men and 63 women) and 460 in the Junior category (320 boys and 140 girls).

Speaking at the event, Boka Rochill of National Youth Climate Consortium (NYCC) described the marathon as the start of a transformative journey for the city, stated a DIPR report.

Run 4 Green is not just a run, it is a new chapter and a new beginning to make Dimapur greener and healthier, Rochill emphasised. He highlighted that the initiative serves as a call to action for the community, particularly the youth, to actively participate in building a sustainable and environmentally conscious future.

He said that the event brought together citizens, government departments, and organisations to raise awareness on clean air, tree plantation, and environmental conservation and expressed optimism that this movement will spark lasting change, making Dimapur a role model for other cities in environmental responsibility.

In a short speech, LH Thangi Mannen, Director and Founding Member of Earth Alliance, Nagaland, emphasised that the Run for Green Dimapur is more than just an event, it is a personal and collective commitment to the environment.

It is not only about running for a greener Dimapur, but also about running for ourselves. To build a much greener future, the movement must begin today, Mannen stated. She further urged that if such efforts are continued and expanded, they will have a lasting impact for generations to come.

Encouraging the youth to take the lead, she appealed to the younger generation to actively participate in these kinds of initiatives, as they are the key to shaping a sustainable and environmentally conscious future.

EAC Dimapur, Imlijungla Lemtur highlighted that for the first time, multiple government agencies have come together with a shared vision to make Dimapur greener. Speaking at the event, she stressed the importance of collective action in addressing environmental concerns. This is the first time so many government agencies have united as one. We must contribute by planting more trees, making Dimapur greener, and awaken from our complacency, she stated.

Yanathung Kithan, Member Secretary, NPCB also spoke at the event.
