Dimapur Municipal Council culminates Swachhata Hi Seva

Dimapur, October 3 (MExN): Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) held the culmination cum award ceremony of the Swachhata Hi Seva (SHS) 2024 campaign at the Lion’s Club Hall, Nepali Basti, Dimapur on October 2. The event marked the conclusion of a series of activities promoting cleanliness and sanitation in the city, stated a DIPR report.

Chief Executive Officer of DMC, Thungchanbemo Tungoe, provided the highlight of SHS 2024, outlining the efforts and impact of the campaign said that Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) campaign under the banner Swachhata Hi Seva is an initiative aimed at cleaning the environment and promoting hygiene across the city. 

The special guest, Hukheto Yepthomi, Chairperson of DMC, addressed the gathering, highlighted how the movement has brought communities together with a shared vision of cleanliness. He praised the unity and collaboration between school children, senior citizens, churches, and shopkeepers, stating that everyone has contributed not only by cleaning their surroundings but also by changing their mind set towards hygiene.

Yepthomi acknowledged the various activities taken up by different groups and organizations, which he said were a testament to collective responsibility and action. He emphasized that while spreading awareness is important, it is equally crucial to take responsibility for managing waste.

He stated that in 2023, Dimapur generated around 84 metric tonnes of waste, and it must have increased by now. And so one must be mindful of how we use resources and manage waste properly. Cleanliness is one aspect, but waste management is another. Sensible waste management will allow the DMC to focus on other important activities, he said.

Yepthomi reminded the public that cleanliness is a continuous journey and urged everyone to keep the spirit of cleanliness alive. “The seeds we plant today will grow into a cleaner future,” he added.

Short speeches were delivered by Achum Jami, Convenor of DMC Sanitation, and Mhonjan Humtsoe, Coordinator of Swachhata Hi Seva 2024, they highlighted the importance of community involvement in keeping Dimapur clean. Humtsoe emphasized the need for Nagas to develop a sense of civic responsibility, urging the community to adopt better practices for a cleaner future. Both Jami and Humtsoe promised to improve the campaign in the coming year.

Awards for Swachh Bharat Mission competitions results were also declared during the event and the winners were facilitated by the special guest.

Mini marathon- 1st: Mankei; 2nd: Ram Krishna Rad

Tug of war- Winner: team Sonu new market; Second winner: team Karim

Poster making-1st: Nandini from Kumari from Neingulie Memorial High School; 2nd: Tecaanrin from Lewis Academy; 3rd: Varshita Bothra, Lewis Academy

Certificates of appreciation were also given out to various NGOs and individuals for their contributions towards clean Dimapur.
