The Dimapur Police have arrested a man on October 8 from Danapur in Patna (Bihar) for allegedly defrauding a Dimapur-based businessperson.

Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Dimapur Police today informed that a man named Ashutosh introduced himself as the son of a regional manager of the Indian Railways to a Dimapur-based businessperson earlier this year. He offered help towards a contract to cater in the Indian Railways through the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC). “After an initial meeting in Dimapur, the accused provided the businessperson with his pan card, aadhar card and a cheque worth Rs. 10 Lakh as assurance,” said the PRO.

This convinced the businessperson. If any more convincing was required, the accused emailed him four ‘tender documents’ purportedly from New Delhi where he claimed to have already invested Rs. 56 Lakh towards the said tender. “Seeing the documents, the complainant (businessperson) transferred Rs. 10 Lakh to the account of the conman,” said the PRO while explaining the case. As the tender date expired and the assurance cheque bounced, the businessperson began to get worried as no news was forthcoming whether the tender was shortlisted or approved by the Indian Railways. “He contacted some relatives who reached out to the IRCTC headquarters in New Delhi, only to realize that the whole thing was fake,” said the Dimapur Police PRO.

Thereafter, the businessperson lodged a complaint with the Dimapur West Police Station where the case was registered. “We arrested him from Danapur in Patna on October 8 with the help of the Railway Police Force,” informed the PRO.

On enquiry, the Dimapur Police found six cases pending against the accused conman in different states including Delhi (1), Mumbai (2), Uttar Pradesh (2) and Chhattisgarh (1). An advisory has been issued by the Dimapur Police in the aftermath of the case. “Before entering into any contract, please check the background and credentials of the person you are dealing with. Ensure your own economic safety.”
