Dimapur, October 23 (MExN): Gracious Life Foundation (GLF) organised a mental health awareness session with the Office of the Commissioner of Police, Dimapur on October 23. As part of their community outreach programme, police personnel from various thana and departments in and around Dimapur were present for the session. The central theme was on: “Mental Health at the Workplace” following this year’s global theme by WFMH, a press release received from GLF stated. 

The session was led by Manom Wallim ACP (HQ). Speaking on the theme, Rovikhono Savino, Psychologist at GLF mentioned the importance of mental well-being and its impact in the workplace and work-related risks associated with mental health issues if there are lack of guidelines and policies for mental health. 

Savino also shared briefly on how police personnel are at greater risk of mental health issues stating that one is every ten struggled from mental illness globally. She expressed the need of understanding the potential psychological threats that police officers face, such as problems with family members, lack of social support within the organisation, prolonged hours of work and an excessive workload, police culture and prolonged exposure to critical situations and traumatic events leading to chronic mental illnesses including suicide, increase alcohol consumption, smoking and other unhealthy coping mechanisms. 

The session concluded with discussion on how mental health issues for police officers can be addressed by suggesting more awareness programs, seeking professional help, psychological self-assessment tools, creating an inclusive space to support and encourage each other as well as practicing self-care techniques, meditation and physical fitness which all co-relates with good mental well-being.
