The common ‘Teachers Day’ celebration of schools under Dimapur district was held at Covenant Hall, Christian Higher Secondary School, which was graced by Prof. Alongla P Aier of Oriental Theological Seminary.

Prof Alongla in her address said it is a big challenge to be a good teacher, especially in Nagaland, where education is not faring well if one is to believe by the report one reads.

Stating that quality education in Nagaland remains elusive, Alongla pointed out that school dropouts in primary schools in Nagaland are among the highest in the country. She also highlighted on the unending problems of proxy teachers, absentee teachers and others.

“The big question is what can we do? Should we remain blind, silent, and ignore….because it’s not affecting us directly?” Alongla asked and added there is no easy answer but that the people as a whole cannot remain untouched.

“We must take seriously our calling as teachers and that means going the extra mile to improve our situation. Let us not forget that we are accountable to God Almighty what we do with the influence and power. Let us not forget that we are in the business of making a generation, even a nation to rise or fall. If ever Nagaland needs dedicated, skilled teachers, it is now”, she said.

The guest of honour also reminded that the single most important factor that influences learning is the life and personality of the teacher.

“Teachers are role models that young people look upto. It is impossible not to influence the students we teach-positively or negatively. We make an impact upon their lives for better or worse,” Alongla said.

Deputy DEO Dimapur, R Amongla Jamir, presided over the honouring of teachers and presentation of awards. A total of 30 teachers from both Government and private school received awards for their dedicated services. Principal GHSS Chumukedima, Karen, spoke on behalf of the teacher awardees.

Students from various schools entertained the teachers with special songs, dances and choreography.
