The Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) held the culmination cum award ceremony for the Ward Participation on the RRR (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) Collection Drive, here at DDSC Stadium with Sachin Jaiswal, IAS Deputy Commissioner, Dimapur as the chief guest on June 5.
The nationwide campaign is initiated by Swachh Bharat Mission Urban 2.0 under the theme ‘Meri LiFE, Mera Swachh Shehar’ which was launched on May 20. The three-week campaign culminated today in line with the World Environment Day.
The DC while recognizing the efforts of the DMC and the participating colonies, highlighted the importance of sensitisation in the community on the basics of leading a healthy lifestyle. Underscoring that we are all part of the system, the DC emphasized that unless the society shoulders the responsibility, it will be a struggle. Maintaining that the DMC was also struggling with no proper revenue mechanism, he called upon the public to do their part, such as paying taxes on time and putting in effort to create lesser waste.
Earlier, presenting the timeline of the three-week campaign, Consultant, Waste Management for DMC Adrian Mahung said that the DMC received an overwhelming amount of items, with almost 986 kg of books, 3686 kg of reusable clothes and 310 kg of plastic.
Eleven colonies participated in the campaign where the first distribution of clothes and shoes was held on May 31 with 95% of all the waste being received by the needy ones. The second collection was held on June 3 at Supermarket area.
Mahung informed that shoes and clothes were the maximum amount that people benefitted from and for the rest of the clothes that were not reusable, the DMC intends to take care of it in the “most environmental friendly way,” so that it doesn't reenter the waste system.
He made an appeal to all to bring change in their own colonies by protecting and reducing waste in the environment and in turn be an inspiration to the neighboring colonies which would be an achievement for the city as a whole.
Acknowledging the participating colonies, W Manpai Phom, Administrator DMC said that while the campaign is a central initiative and has culminated today, the DMC will come up with a system in the local level where they will continue with the process, giving an impetus to the overall zero-waste ecosystem, while also helping the ones in need. Highlighting on the Ministry's aim to have permanent RRR centres at the city, town and the ward level as well, Phom said that with cooperation from the Dimapur Urban Council Chairmen federation and the GBs and the public, they will come up with a system to have such centres at the ward level and in the city too.
While the prize money may be small, he also requested the winning wards to utilise it as seed money to improve waste management system and continue to contribute in making the city clean. Sematila colony, Ward 7 was awarded the winner with prize money of 70k, while Police colony Ward 5 and Lengrijan colony Ward 12 stood second and third with prize money of 60k and 50k respectively. CAN Youth, Naga Women Hoho and individuals also donated towards the campaign.
