Dimapur, July 8 (MExN): The Dimapur Sümi Council (DSC) and Joint Council Forum (JSC) comprising of NST Colony, Churches Colony and Middle Point (Dimapur) have expressed outrage over the alleged sexual assault of a minor girl in New Market Dimapur.
The two organisations also identified the alleged accused as Ali Mortuja, originally from Badarpur, Karimganj, Assam, and presently residing and conducting business in Dimapur’s New Market. The accused is currently under police custody.
The Forum stands in full solidarity with the victim and her family during this difficult time. We trust that justice will be delivered transparently and without delay in accordance with the Constitution and relevant laws of the land.
The DSC condemned the incident as a “reprehensible act” and an affront to the safety, dignity, and values of society.
“Crimes of this nature are intolerable and must be met with the strictest application of the law,” it stated, while calling for the immediate cancellation of the trade license of the accused.
It further urged the law enforcement agencies to expedite the investigation and ensure that justice is served through due legal process.
The council also called for vigilance and accountability in safeguarding the rights and well-being of local citizens, particularly women and children.
The DSC stands firmly with the victim and her family during this traumatic time and demands that the legal system respond swiftly, fairly and decisively, it added, while urging other civil societies, women and student organisations to stand unitedly against such appalling acts.
This reprehensible act constitutes a grave offence under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and is a violation of both the child’s fundamental rights and our community’s sense of safety, the JSC stated in its condemnation.
The forum further called upon the police and concerned authorities to carry out a thorough, impartial, and time-bound investigation and to ensure that the accused is prosecuted as per the full extent of the law.
It has also come to the Forum’s attention that the accused may have exhibited concerning behavioural patterns in the past, raising serious safety concerns, particularly for women in the community, it said.
The growing presence of individuals with unverified backgrounds in Dimapur poses a risk that must be addressed proactively, it added, urging the administration to strengthen verification processes and uphold public safety through lawful means.
