Dimapur traders oppose new tax; threatens stir

Dimapur, July 21 (MExN): The Dimapur Chamber of Commerce and its subsidiaries have reacted strongly to an order reportedly issued by the Additional Deputy Commissioner, Dimapur permitting Naga Council Dimapur to collect taxation as ‘Naga Commission’ on certain items coming to Dimapur. This was informed in a press note issued by Kasheto Yeptho, President of Dimapur Chamber of Commerce (DCC).

According to the press note from the DCC, a copy of the order signed by ADC Dimapur has permitted Naga Council Dimapur to collect tax on building materials, timbers, perishable goods including such as food items, vegetables and fruits, animal, birds, fish etc till 31/10/2010.

The DCC pointed out that various taxation have already infested Dimapur which directly or indirectly have been a cause of recent price hike in Dimapur. “At this juncture the Dimapur Chamber of Commerce of Dimapur is totally against giving taxation to any NGOs”, stated the press note while also adding that due to too much of taxation even the goods transport vehicles have become reluctant to enter Dimapur. The DCC also requested the general public to co-operate with the business community of Dimapur and voice out against such illegal taxation.

It was informed that as per various complain received from various business establishments, the Dimapur Chamber of Commerce after much deliberation on the matter appealed to the district administration to cancel the order within 3 days, failing which the hardware dealers and perishable goods dealers would resort to indefinite close down of its business in the form of first phase of agitation. 

In the second phase, the entire business community of Dimapur would resort to indefinite closure of business, the DCC informed and appealed to the administration and police to remove all illegal tax collection at gates within a period of one week and not give permission for such illegal collection of tax in future.
