Dimapur zoo attracts visitors on holiday

Dimapur, January 2 (MExN): Among the plenty of sites for picnics and other fun activities in Dimapur, the Rangapahar Zoological Park proved to be the favourite choice for Dimapurians on New Year day. The zoo had plenty of visitors, both old and young, excitedly watching the birds and animals kept inside enclosures. As children watched the animals with fascination and bewilderment, taking children out for a fun day didn’t appear to be a chore for the parents either.
According to zoo officials, holiday season is the best time for the zoo to earn revenue. On January 1, the zoo earned a modest sum of ` 7, 500: a large amount compared to other days. ‘Roughly about 700 to 750 people visited the zoo on New Year,” a zoo official said. Of late, more people have been frequenting the Dimapur zoo. It provides a perfect visiting place for animal enthusiasts and children.
Since its inauguration in 2008, the zoo has developed considerably. The dense jungle area is now developed into a fine looking spot for visitors. The zoo now has a number of animals and birds like the clouded leopard, black bear, hornbills, fish owl, Burmese tortoise and different species of monkeys. Although the zoo has potential to develop further, fund constrain has kept things at bay. “Other zoos are willing to donate more animals but we don’t have enclosures to keep them,” forest range officer, Obed Swu mentioned. He said so far the zoo has been functioning only with funds received from the State government. Swu said that more infrastructure is needed for the zoo to expand. With the master plan for the zoo approved, Swu expressed hope that funds will come through from the Zoo Authority for the development of the zoo.
Meanwhile, the zoo very much provides the required place for people to relax, and spend a meaningful day with friends and family.
