One of Dimapur’s oldest and busiest markets is set to undergo a drastic transformation. A 19 crore mega-market project with a parking lot is currently underway inside New Market. Proposed to be completed by the end of next year, the structure, once complete will be the first of its kind in the state. Unlike other demolished shops in New Market which are taking longer to rebuild than expected, the new building will hopefully be handed over to the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) within the stipulated time, DMC said.
Undertaken by the department of Urban Development, the plan is to plant 20-feet pillars on either ends of the present road inside the market; one toward the entrance from church road and another at the exit toward GS road. The new building will be a high-rise, giving a ‘submerged’ look to New Market.
The first floor will be used as a parking lot while the next two floors will have shopping malls. The malls will be furnished with all modern facilities and parking taxes will be imposed on vehicle using the lot. The rooms or stalls inside the shopping malls will be rented out to interested people in due time.
The foundation works for the project is currently underway although work for the last few days have been stalled due to heavy rains. The existing road beneath the structure will remain to be used as it is.
The DMC is also building housing for the urban poor in Netaji colony and Burma Camp. An urban development project, these houses once complete will be rented out to the poor on minimum rent. Housing for the poor is a central scheme in which the government will focus on property rights to the urban poor and provide amenities.
