Disaster preparedness taught in school

Dimapur, May 23 (MExN): Nagaland State and the whole north east India live in ‘V seismic zone,’ which is the most vulnerable and hazardous zone. Keeping this in focus, the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), Home department in collaboration with Civil Defense (CD) and Home Guards (HGs), Central Training Institute (CTI) Toluvi organized a-day ‘school awareness programme on disaster management’ on May 23 at Pastoral Centre, Holy Cross Higher Secondary School (HCHSS), Dimapur. 

The programme was conducted for staff and students of the HCHSS where resource persons from NSDMA and CTI highlighted disaster management, safety measures and essentiality of first aids to be carried out during sudden calamities, accidents and any major events. The resource persons also expressed the need for disaster preparedness and safety tips to be taken as disaster may strike anytime without warning.  

Training and capacity officer, NSDMA home department, Khrolo-u Koza speaking on ‘disaster preparedness and safety tips’ where she expressed the importance of understanding preventive actions, having knowledge of certain life-saving tools and techniques inorder to reduce the impact of disaster like fire, earthquake etc. She also said various disaster management programme were conducted in schools, institutions across the state to spread awareness on disaster management and urged schools and institutions to form disaster management team including early warning team, activity/event organizing team, search and rescue team, first aid team as natural disaster remains uncertain and cannot be prevented. 

Dr. Thingtimla Yim, medical officer, CTI, CD and HGs gave power point presentation on first aid tips and carried out demonstrations along with her team. She reiterated, “Every year thousands of people die or are permanently injured because they do not receive emergency care in time”. She said the aim of first aid is to preserve life, promote recovery, prevent worsening of the condition and prevent panic adding first aid should start at the spot with simple and minimum procedure and handling. She further highlighted the necessity of first aid in mass scale disaster and ones responsibilities while carrying out first aid to others. 

In the programme Keren Rose, state media officer, NSDMA gave introductory note of the programme and Rev. Fr. Sunil CK, principal, HCHSS, Dimapur welcome the resource persons, staff and students.
