Mon, December 2 (MExN): The DISHA (District Integrated Strategy for HIV & AIDS), Mon celebrated World AIDS Day on December 1 to show support for people living with HIV and to remember those who have died from AIDS-related illnesses.

The event was organised in collaboration with Mon Theological College (MTC) Shansham org, Mon Users Network, Evergreen Welfare Society, Red Ribbon Club, and District Legal Service Authority, supported by NSACS.  It was held at Nyamto Wangsha Assembly Hall, Konjong Higher Secondary School, KBBB Mission Center. 

“Despite many scientific improvements,” guest speaker Pakon Phom, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Mon said, “AIDS can only be prevented.” He stated that it is challenging to reach the WHO's 2030 goal of eradicating HIV & AIDS because 39.9 million people globally have AIDS, and 13 lakh new cases were reported in 2023. He concentrated on issues that needed to be resolved in order to achieve the goal. 

“As individuals,” he said, “we should raise awareness in order to increase knowledge of the illness and its causes, particularly in rural areas, with great involvement from the churches.” According to him, we should also make sure that those who are infected receive the right medical attention and prompt, closely monitored medication and proper medical care. “We should all serve as ambassadors to bring WHOs goal to life,” he stated. 

Assistant Professor Rongsennungla, Nodal Officer RRC, Wangkhao Government College (WGC), Mon declared the winners of the poster making competition among WGC RRC members, who were presented with certificates and cash prizes by Guest Speaker Pakon. 

A prayer and candlelight vigil were held in memory of lost lives due to AIDS, playing a song 'Go Light Your World' by Ngamyoh K. 

Nyeilem K, ICTC Counselor DH, chaired the programme; Rev T Honlong Konyak, Pastor MCBC said the invocation; MTC students presented a special number; significance of the day was shared by Longthrang DIS DAPCU; Dr Wungyong DPO (RCH&UIP) and L Mumba K, Speaker KSU, gave short speeches and Longyim Tzudir, DPO DISHA, Mon gave the vote of thanks.
