District Legal Services celebrate Int'l Day of Persons with Disabilities

‘Transformation towards sustainable and resilient society for all’  

Dimapur, December 3 (MExN): District Legal Services in Nagaland commemorated International Day of Persons with Disabilities with the theme ‘Transformation towards sustainable and resilient society for all’ on December 3.  

DIMAPUR: Dimapur District Legal Services Authority (DDLSA) observed the day in collaboration with Faith Baptist Church, Nagaland State Disability Forum, Prodigals Home, and Exodus Federation at Faith Baptist Church Dimapur.  

Sharing on legal rights of Persons with Disabilities (PwDs), Senti, Panel Lawyer DDLSA said that the rights of PwDs should not be undermined by any section of society. It is the responsibility of the State and society to uplift them at the forefront, she asserted, according to a press release from Nagaland State Legal Services Authority.  

Kekrieleü, Panel Lawyer DDLSA shared about the NALSA (Legal Services to the Workers in the Unorganized Sector) Scheme and Moatila, Panel Lawyer DDLSA shared about the NALSA Scheme for Disabled Persons.  

Chuba, Panel Lawyer DDLSA highlighted the Legal Services Authority and its function. This was followed by an interaction session.  

MOKOKCHUNG: Mokokchung District Legal Services Authority (MDLSA) in collaboration with Care and Support Society, CURE Foundation, MDPAPWDs and BLDPOs organized a programme at Town Hall, Mokokchung.  

Sachin Jaiswal, IAS, Deputy Commissioner of Mokokchung, who was the chief guest, asserted we should never look down on people with disabilities as disabled person but recognize them as differently abled because of their talents. He urged the parents to have a positive attitude towards their children by encouraging their talents.  

The Deputy Commissioner also asked to avail schemes provided by the government so that the differently abled children could become self dependent. Lamenting that though so much has been done for the differently abled it is inadequate, he said the challenge is to look at what could be implemented, the release informed.  

Limanungsang, Panel Lawyer MDLSA highlighted on NALSA scheme for disabled and the workings of legal services authority. He also apprised on how the legal services can help the persons with disabilities. Brief reports were presented by MDPAPWD, BLDPO, Care and Support Society, CURE Foundation and short speech by Nagaland Parents Association for Disabled (NAPAD).  

WOKHA: Wokha District Legal Services Authority (WDLSA) organized a programme at DC conference hall, Wokha.  

In his speech, Dr Manizir Jeelani, Deputy Commissioner, Wokha said everyone is equal and that people with disability are considered special. “This is why it is our duty to give them due love and affection and not discriminate them,” he stated.  

At the same time, he said, people with disability should step forward out of social stigma and myth and avail the benefits which have been guaranteed to them by the government, the release said.  

President of Wokha District Disabled Association informed that the association is made up of persons with disabilities only and they often face many difficulties in availing schemes and mingling with the people in the societies. He therefore requested the legal services and administration and social welfare department to help them in whatever ways they can.  

Theme speaker Thungdemo Kyong, Chief, Team Metamorphosis said that disability is also a state of mind and not merely physical, the release mentioned. He encouraged the persons with disabilities that they can do what normal persons are unable to achieve by citing examples of various successful persons who are physically disabled.  

Speaking on rights of persons with disabilities, David Ezung, Panel Lawyer WDLSA said that PwDs have a right to equal opportunities as enshrined in the Indian constitution. They have equal rights and opportunities like other normal persons, he stated, adding PwDs have 3% job reservation in Nagaland and have a right to participate as other normal persons.  

Wobenthung J Patton, Superintendent of Observation Home spoke on NSLSA schemes for disabled persons. Keynote address was delivered by Gracy Ezung, Retainer Lawyer, WDLSA.
