District Level Jhum Resources Management Committee launched

Kohima, March 21 (DIPR): The Deputy Commissioner Kohima, Rajesh Soundararajan, IAS formally launched the District Level Jhum Resources Management Committee (JRMC) with the District officers on March 20 at DC’s Office Chamber, Kohima.  

Speaking at the programme, the DC stated that the programme has been launched to create a platform for integrated land use planning and management, for sustainable management of jhum cultivation and its resources, for ecological and livelihood security through the integration and linkages of different stakeholders as ATMA, Agriculture and Allied Departments of KVKs, ICAR, SARs, universities etc., and to act as a technical advisory body in land use planning, resource management at district, block and village levels. He encouraged the ATMA team to play a vital role through interaction with the farmers, raising awareness, imparting skills and sharing experiences to promote community participation in environmental management, social and economic activities in the district.  

Briefing on the roles and responsibilities of the JRMC, DFO Kohima, Yhunsenlo Kent said that, the main objective of the Committee is to promote crop diversification and building resilience for farmers to climate change and ensure food security, to protect and develop hill slopes of Jhum areas through soil and water conservation, to promote sustainable fallow management practices in Jhum areas, to coordination and felicitate linkages with local, national and international programmes, to provide a platform to share learning and experiences for an integrated approach of sustainable management on Jhum land and its resources etc.
