DMC clarifies on Sunday closure

DIMAPUR,  JAN 15 (MExN): Upholding that the Sunday ban would continue to be enforced, the Dimapur Municipal Council today said that the common interest of the general public shall be maintained at any cost and even in the future, certain review/relaxation/decision/regulation in the interest of the people shall “definitely be considered and acted upon accordingly.” The civic body has however firmly stated that in no way can common interest be compromised for isolated individual interests. As clearly sated in Section 65, 66 and 68 of the Nagaland Municipal Act, 2001 each and every Municipal and Town Council shall have an Executive Officer from the respective district administration, who, according to the powers and functions therein ‘shall carry out the day to day administration of the Municipal Council or Town Council,’” a release said. The State government had in a subsequent letter through the Home department clearly directed that the Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC), Dimapur is to function as the Chief Officer/ Executive Officer in ex-officio capacity of the DMC.

“With the knowledge and support of the District Administration, Police and concerned authorities in the district, closure of shops on Sundays as per the public demand was ordered as is observed all across the country which is also a global phenomena,” the release said. Since the DMC is empowered by the State government to issue trade licenses to any kinds of shops and business establishments under Section 396, 398, 399, 402, 403 and all the sub-sections therein, vide the Nagaland Municipal Act, the DMC formulates all the “norms on how to run the business in a proper, organized and disciplined system for the welfare of the people and not on religious grounds/ considerations as misconstrued by certain sections of the society,” according to DMC Chairman Y Vikheho Awomi.

While welcoming any kind of healthy and constructive criticism and suggestion for the betterment of Dimapur city, ‘certain individuals and sections of the society’ have been asked to “encourage any authority that is working day and night purely for the welfare of the society.”
