DMC installing fire extinguishers without prior clearance: DUCCF

Dimapur, September 24 (MExN): The Dimapur Urban Council Chairmen Federation (DUCCF) has alleged that the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) is installing fire extinguishers across the town without following proper procedures or obtaining clearance from the Fire & Emergency Services (F&ES) Department.

In a letter to the Officer-in-Charge of the F&ES Department, Dimapur, on September 23, the DUCCF stated that such installations were being carried out without prior permission, technical assessment, or certification from the department.

“As fire safety is a highly technical subject, such equipment requires proper assessment, verification, and certification by the competent authority to ensure compliance with safety standards and operational readiness,” it added.

According to the Federation, the absence of consultation with the F&ES Department raises questions about the effectiveness, suitability, and future maintenance of these extinguishers. Improper or unauthorised installations may pose risks rather than provide genuine safety assurance to the public, it noted.

Accordingly, the DUCCF urged the F&ES Department to examine the matter and take necessary steps to ensure adherence to prescribed norms.

It also called for a directive to the DMC and other concerned bodies to coordinate with and obtain clearance from the F&ES Department before undertaking any such installations in the future.
