Dimapur, February 11 (MExN): The Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) has directed all registered colonies under its jurisdiction to revamp and reconstitute their existing sanitation teams or committees to streamline waste management activities in compliance with the Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules, 2026.
The council recalled that an order was issued in July 2020 for the formation of sanitation teams or committees in all registered colonies with the objective of improving sanitation, waste collection and cleanliness at the colony level.
In a fresh directive, the DMC said the SWM Rules, 2026 emphasise strengthened source segregation, decentralised waste handling, community participation and accountability at the local level.
Accordingly, all colonies have been requested to reconstitute their sanitation teams to ensure effective implementation of sanitation measures.
The revamp process will include revalidation of members of the sanitation teams or committees with clearly defined roles and responsibilities, and designation of a nodal person to coordinate with DMC sanitation officials.
The committees are also required to actively engage in source segregation of waste — including wet, dry, domestic hazardous and sanitary waste — monitoring of door-to-door waste collection, prevention of littering and open dumping, and awareness generation within their respective colonies.
Colonies have been asked to submit updated details of their sanitation teams to the DMC Sanitation Section within the month of February.
All Colony Councils and Chairmen have been requested to treat the directive as important and time-bound and to extend full cooperation to ensure a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable Dimapur.
The council cautioned that non-compliance may invite action under applicable municipal provisions and the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026.
