DNSU alleges exploitation of students and parents by some edu institutions

Dimapur, August 9 (MExN): The Dimapur Naga Students’ Union (DNSU) has brought to light concerning practices within the education sector that are reportedly “exploiting” students and parents from disadvantaged backgrounds.

A statement by the DNSU said that some educational institutions have prioritized profit over education, leading to various forms of exploitation, including physical abuse, harassment, and unjustifiably high fees.

The DNSU informed that it has received numerous complaints about institutions compelling students to apply for scholarships through designated agencies that charge exorbitant fees, often Rs 500 or more.

While students can apply for these scholarships online or through cyber cafes for a fee ranging between Rs 150-200, many institutions have partnered with specific agencies, coercing students into using these more expensive services, it informed. Further, the DNSU emphasized that there is no government requirement for students to apply through these agencies, making this practice particularly exploitative.

The DNSU, urged affluent parents to scrutinize these practices and resist paying inflated fees without question. "It is crucial for parents to be aware of these exploitative practices and advocate for a fair and equitable education system that prioritizes student well-being and academic success over institutional profit," it stated.

The DNSU called for greater oversight and accountability in the education sector to prevent such injustices and ensure that all students, regardless of their financial background, have access to a fair and supportive learning environment.
