Dimapur, June 30 (MExN): The Dimapur Naga Students' Union (DNSU) has urged the Department of School Education to extend the upcoming summer vacation for government schools in view of the rising temperatures and worsening weather conditions in Dimapur during the months of July and August.
In a press release, the Union said it was “deeply concerned regarding the inadequate duration of the upcoming summer break for government.
“Considering that the peak of summer heat in Dimapur occurs during July and August, the DNSU urgently appeals to the concerned department to extend the summer vacation to a minimum of 20 days, or ideally, a full month until the 4th week of August 2025 in the interest of students' and teachers' well-being,” it stated.
The DNSU highlighted that the ongoing extreme weather conditions are causing “significant hardship” for both students and teachers in urban areas of Dimapur. Apart from the intense summer heat, the Union pointed out that “issues like water logging and occasional flooding have made the situation worse.”
It added that “frequent power outages and load shedding, which are common during this season,” have further compounded the problem, particularly because “most schools lack backup power systems,” leading to “increased discomfort and serious obstacles in carrying out regular classes during the summer peak.”
“Given Dimapur's relatively milder winters, a longer class during this period could still provide students with sufficient time to complete their syllabus without the health concerns associated with the peak summer heat,” it stated.
