Dimapur, September 25 (MExN): The Dimapur Naga Students’ Union (DNSU) today condemned what it termed as the “unauthorised occupation” of classrooms at Government Middle School (GMS) Midland by the Department of Health & Family Welfare (DoH&FW), Nagaland.
According to the union, the DoH&FW is operating a dispensary using some classrooms of GMS Midland despite an order from the Principal Director of the Education Department to vacate the premises by July 5, 2024. This is disrupting the academic environment and infringing upon the rights of students, the DNSU asserted, adding that the blatant disregard for authority and student welfare is “unacceptable.”
While conveying its deep concern for the health and well-being of the community, the union stated that the dispensary’s location within the school compromises the safety and education of the students. “We prioritize both education and health, but they cannot coexist in this manner,” it asserted.
Accordingly, the DNSU demanded that the DoH&FW relocate the dispensary immediately to a suitable alternative site to ensure uninterrupted education and safeguard students’ health. It also urged the Colony Council to revoke any consent granted for the ‘unauthorised occupation.’
The union appealed to the Education Department to enforce its order and safeguard school infrastructure. A press release issued by DNSU President Hinoto P. Aomi and Secretary of Education Kevin Gonmei cautioned that it would be compelled to take democratic action to protect the rights of students if the issue is not addressed urgently.
