A program for strengthening ‘Traditional Friendship’ or ‘Akangjungshi’ between Dobashis of Mokokchung and Tuensang districts was held today at the official residence of the Mokokchung deputy Commissioner. This was the second time that the Dobashis of the two districts had this kind of a program to strengthen the traditional bond between them, the first being held in the month of July 2005 Tuensang. ‘Akangjungshi’ is a traditional Naga customary practice where two parties strengthen diplomatic ties between them, avow support to each other, and resolve to cooperate and safeguard each other for mutual benefit, promising a consistent and perennial treaty between the parties involved. Minister of School Education, SCERT, S&T, IT and Technical Education Imkong L.Imchen was also present at the occasion, who while delivering his speech later on encouraged the Dobashis of the two districts to develop an “eternal friendship” between them as well as to develop the same with Dobashis of other districts of the state.
Mokokchung DC Ramongo Lotha while addressing the Dobashis during the historic ‘Akangjungshi’ asserted that customs and customary law are not against the tenets of Christianity as long as it remains interpreted in the right perspective. Problems crop up with their misinterpretation or misuse, he added. He exhorted the Dobashis and GBs to shoulder the responsibility of maintaining social harmony.
Others who also spoke during the occasion included Seang Chang, PA to DC, Tuensang and President of All Nagaland Dobashis Association, and M.Chuba Imsong, PA to DC Mokokchung. Retired PA to DC Mokokchung M.Toshi also exhorted the Dobashis. Ao Senden President Temjenkaba also spoke during the occasion, and said that “Naga Independence” can be attained but that Nagas must first unite amongst themselves.
Not surprisingly, the fundamental idea of today’s ‘Akangjungshi’ between the Dobashis of the two districts occured like sending a message to the people in general that the DBs and GBs are persistent in their effort to bring to halt the factional clashes, with every speaker at the occasion speaking with ‘Naga political issue’ overtones.
The function was chaired by I. Asungba DB, invocation was pronounced by Meyapokyim DB, welcome address delivered by Lanunuken, Head DB and vote of thanks was moved by Imkongyapang, PA to DC followed by a mass benediction. A cultural exchange program also followed afterward.
