Based on a Mizo folktale narrated to her by her mother, Easterine Kire’s latest book, “Don’t Run, My Love” was released today by the Principal of Don Bosco College, Kohima, Rev. Fr. Suresh at an event coinciding with the Pre-Christmas celebration of the institution.
Briefing about the book, Easterine Kire said “Don’t Run, My Love” is a story of a young man, who follows a certain tradition called “Tiger man”, a culture where young men look for power by becoming dual soul with the tiger. She dedicated the book to all young readers while putting across that “it is a love story, and also about power.” “Both the man and woman in the story are looking for true love”, she enlightened. In the meantime, she impressed upon the significance of the venue (Don Bosco) for the book launch while revealing that one of the senior students gave permission for the author to use her name for the female protagonist.
Also speaking to The Morung Express after the launch, she said, “the book can be read at different levels and can be enjoyed as a love story with a twist at the end while scholars and researchers will be looking for abusive pattern (domestic violence) in relationships.” “I didn’t mentally design it like that”, she explained but pointed out that it is a story peculiar to the region and hence, brought it out from there.
Delving further into the book in this regard, she said, “just thinking out the idea that the situation is a curse” while impressing upon that “some men don’t want it (weretiger) but it comes through their lineage.” She went on to say that it is natural for young people in the age of 18-19 to search for love but also expressed that, “it does carry a statutory warning- that you should not just look for surface beauty.”
However, she insisted that one should first just enjoy the book and then look for other levels while stating hope that readers would read and think about both sides of the story. “It leaves a lot of room for thought for the readers,” she said.
“Don’t Run, My Love” is published by Speaking Tiger and is priced at Rs. 299 and available online and at CROSSWORD in Kohima.
Mention may be made here that Easterine Kire’s book, “Son of the Thundercloud” also won the Tata Literature Live Awards 2017 apart from several other awards she received for her commendable works in literature over the years.
