‘Don't take the support of non-native MLA’

Newmai News Network Imphal | March 14   Democratic Students Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) has warned political parties not to take the support of a legislator elected from Jiribam assembly constituency saying the Independent MLA is "not an indigenous person of Manipur". Md Ashab Uddin was elected from Jiribam assembly constituency bordering Silchar town in Assam.   Addressing a press meet in Imphal today, DESAM said that Md Ashab Uddin should be sidelined by all the political parties in Manipur for he is not originally from Manipur. General Secretary of DESAM, Nameirakpam Edison Meitei said that political parties are trying to win the support of the "non indigenous person" for the formation of the government.   The DESAM leader then warned that in the event of political parties securing the support of Md Ashab Uddin to form the government, "we will boycott those political parties in the state." Nameirakpam Edison Meitei also cautioned the people of Manipur that there are several assembly constituencies in the state where "non-natives or migrants" have very high chances of becoming MLAs.   Md Ashab Uddin defeated long time representative of Jiribam Thoudam Debendra Singh (Congress party) by over 1500 vote margin. The Independent candidate got 6537 votes while the Manipur Congress stalwart got 6001 votes. Meanwhile, supporters of Md Ashab Uddin urged the MLA to merge with the BJP for the formation of government. The supporters of Md Ashab Uddin also urged the BJP to "reward" their leader a cabinet berth in the event of the latter joining the saffron party and the subsequent formation of government.
