An official of the Department of Power Nagaland (DoPN) was allegedly summoned and harassed by members of a Naga Political Group in Mon. While the DoPN was silent on the alleged incident, the Association of Power Engineers Nagaland (APEN) issued a press release condemning what it said was “harassment” meted out to one of its members, Er Thanyalo Kath, Sub-Divisional Officer (Electrical) Mon on March 23 at Mon town by some miscreants claiming to be from the GPRN/NSCN.

“Such unwarranted intimidation with death threats on a government officer delivering an essential service to the public is totally uncalled for while the members of APEN are giving their utmost best, performing their duties round the clock to serve the people of the State, such inhuman and outrageous act on our member is un-acceptable,” the press release from the APEN stated. It appealed to the law enforcing agencies to take all necessary steps to book the culprits and impose appropriate action as per law.

The release did not spell out details of the incident but other sources said that the official was summoned to appear before some members of the GPRN/NSCN on March 23 in Mon town. He was allegedly accused of something he was not involved in. He was then detained and threatened and forced to pay a ransom for his release.

Meanwhile, the Mon police was on the case. “We are enquiring into the matter. We will register a suo-moto case,” said a police official.
