As the COVID-19 situation in Nagaland threatens to transition into community spread, the need for a proactive and sensitive citizenry has grown all the more essential. Considering the threat a community spread would have on public health and livelihoods, the Dorians Society, Dimapur organised an awareness campaign in Dimapur on November 26.

Dorians Society Secretary General Sentiningsang Longkumer informed that members, led by its chairperson Temjen Lemtur, took to the streets today on foot sensitizing commuters on the importance of personal protection against a communicable ailment. The COVID awareness campaigners, divided into small groups, covered almost all major road intersections and market hubs starting from Tajen Ao Road (formerly Circular Road) and culminating at Super Market and Burma Camp junction. Posters with COVID advisories as recommended by the Health department were also put up at important road junctions.

Longkumer said that informative leaflets and recommended health masks were also handed away to pedestrians, roadside vendors, shopkeepers, customers and other commuters on cars and public transport venturing out disregarding the  “Dos and Don’ts” COVID advisories as issued by the Health & Welfare Department.

He said, “Covid-19 pandemic is not something the citizens should take lightly or be careless about. If we are not careful or think that the fight is over, it will lead to unnecessary suffering. Through this public awareness drive, we want to appeal to the citizens of Dimapur to be responsible and follow the SOPs diligently. Our simple message to the people is: wear masks, wash your hands and maintain safe distance in public places. We can save our community from deeper problems by keeping these simple things.”

“We also ensured that our members wore masks, gloves and use sanitizers,” he said, while adding that the campaign was organised with due permission from the Dimapur district administration and Dimapur Municipal Council.

He also said that the campaign would not have been possible without the support from well-wishers.
