Dr S C Jamir calls on Gorkhas to protect rich cultural traditions

CHÜMOUKEDIMA, JULY 17 (MExN): The Gorkha community of Chümoukedima district celebrated the 211th Bhanu Jayanti at K4 Venue, Ward-9, Chümoukedima town on  July 13, with former Nagaland Chief Minister and former Governor of Gujarat, Goa, Maharashtra, and Odisha, Dr S C Jamir, attending as the chief guest.

Razouvotuo Chatsu, Chairman of Chümoukedima Village Council and Advisor of Angami Public Organization, attended the programme as guest of honour, while M B Aley, former president of Gorkha Union Mokokchung and retired assistant director in the Department of School Education, was also present as a special invitee.

Speaking on the occasion, chief guest Dr Jamir, in his address, called upon the Gorkha community to preserve and promote their rich cultural traditions. Describing it as a privilege and matter of pride to be part of the Bhanu Jayanti celebration in Chümoukedima district, he reflected on the historical struggles of the Gorkhas and acknowledged their remarkable progress over the years.

Guest of honour Chatsu encouraged the Gorkha community of Chümoukedima district to remain united and foster strong relationships with other communities. He acknowledged the historical journey of the Gorkhas to Nagaland, their integration with the local population, and urged them to uphold values of honesty, humility, and collective progress. Addressing the gathering, Aley highlighted the rich history of the Gorkha community in Nagaland and their contributions towards the development and progress of the state. He also expressed gratitude to the Nagaland government for recognizing the Gorkhas as one of the Non-Naga Local Indigenous Inhabitants of the state.

The programme featured vibrant performances by various Gorkha bands from Chümoukedima district, followed by traditional Gorkha dances and singing, showcasing the community’s cultural heritage.

Jacob Sundas, president of the Gorkha Students' Union Chümoukedima District (GSUCD), extended gratitude to all participants and attendees for their involvement in honouring the legacy and contributions of Adi Kavi Bhanu Bhakta Acharya.

The celebration witnessed the presence of various dignitaries from different communities of Chümoukedima district, organisers said in a release.
