Dr SC Jamir conferred Padma Bhushan

Dimapur, January 25 (MExN): Veteran Naga politician Dr SC Jamir has been awarded the Padma Bhushan, the third-highest civilian award in the Republic of India.


According to an offical statement on Saturday by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Jamir, who is  also a former Chief Minister of Nagaland and the Governor of Maharashtra, Goa and Odisha, has been conferred the ‘Padma Bhushan’ in the field of  'Public Affairs'.


Jamir is a living signatories of the 16-Point Agreement which brought about the creation of Nagaland state.
The winners of Padma Awards, one of the highest civilian Awards of the country conferred in three categories - Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri, were disclosed on Saturday on the eve of the 71st Republic Day.


The Awards are given in various disciplines/fields of activities, viz.- art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, civil service, etc. 


‘Padma Vibhushan’ is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service; ‘Padma Bhushan’ for distinguished service of high order and ‘Padma Shri’ for distinguished service in any field, informed the MHA's statement via PIB.


The awards will be conferred by the President of India at ceremonial functions to be held at Rashtrapati Bhawan usually around March/April every year.


The President has approved conferment of 141 Padma Awards including 4 duo cases (in a duo case, the Award is counted as one), comprising of 7 Padma Vibhushan, 16 Padma Bhushan and 118 Padma Shri Awards in 2020, the statement said.
