Dr SC Jamir, former Governor of Goa, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Odisha, as well as a former Chief Minister of Nagaland on Friday lamented the disparity between the advancements of the 21st century and the unchanging mindset of the people.
Addressing the 61st General Conference of the Ongpangkong Mungdang (OM) at Khensa Village, held under the theme ‘Tasüitang’ (Be Courageous), Jamir reflected on the legacy of the forefathers who ruled with truth and integrity despite their hardships. He urged the Aos and Nagas to focus on the present and take steps towards progress.
Dr Jamir also touched on the Naga National Movement, highlighting the importance of collective work and the need to amplify public voices.
S. Supongmeren Jamir, Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha, who also attended the conference, in a short speech, emphasized the need for truth as the foundation of courage. He encouraged the community to move beyond past glories and focus on honest efforts to grow with competitiveness. Highlighting his electoral victory, Jamir attributed his success to the support of truthful individuals and urged everyone that this should be the beginning and whichever elections comes if everyone stands truthfully, there will be victory.
Stop dwelling on past narratives: Rev Dr Kari Longchar
Rev Dr L Kari Longchar, Missionary at-large, who was the theme speaker, started his speech by saying that Nagaland is corrupted starting from the Chief Minister to the village council, an opposition less government which is almost turning into dictatorship and a nation where the sacrifices of our forefathers for Naga independence and sovereignty is forgotten. “We now have 26 factions and national workers are now threatening the public and even the churches are not free from corruption,” he added.
“Our land will melt before our eyes unless we stand in truth,” Rev Longchar warned, calling for repentance and urging the village councils to prioritize transparency and serve the people with integrity. He also encouraged the Ongpangkong people to stop dwelling on past narratives, particularly the Longterok story, and instead choose to live by biblical teachings. To conclude his speech, he read selected Bible verses on truth and presented a Bible to the OM officers as a symbol of guidance and leadership.
Earlier, OM President Lipokmeren Jamir delivered the welcome address. Greetings were shared by I. Alemmeren Longchar, Chairman of the Khensa Village Council; Chumlamo Humtsoe, ADC Mokokchung; and MarsanenImsong, President of Ao Senden.
The second session of the conference featured the presentation of reports from various committees, followed by the election of new office bearers.
Alemtoshi Imsong from Ungma, Tinumayang from Longkhum, Tiawabang Walling from Khensa, and Imtisunep from Mekuli were elected as the President, Vice-President, General Secretary, and Assistant General Secretary, respectively.
