Dimapur, September 26 (MExN): Dr Sedevi Angami, Director of Christian Institute of Health Sciences &Research (CIHSR), Dimapur has been appointed member of the newly created National Medical Commission (NMC) Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), Government of India.

As per a press release from CIHSR, the appointment is as notified by The Gazette of India on September 24.

Sedevi, who is an MD, DM (Gastroenterology); MA (Bioethics); PGC (Hosp. Admins), will serve on the Medical Assessment and Rating Board for a period of 2 years as part-time Member with effect from September 25.
He represents the NMC in the above cited Commission, the release added.

The Union government on September 25 constituted NMC as the country’s apex regulator of medical education and profession, along with four other autonomous boards. With this, the decades old institution of the Medical Council of India (MCI) stands abolished.

“Along with NMC, the four Autonomous Boards of UG and PG Medical Education Boards, Medical Assessment and Rating Board, and Ethics and Medical Registration Board have also been constituted to help the NMC in day to day functioning,” an official statement informed. 

The notifications in this regard were issued late night on September 24, added the statement issued by  the MoHFW via PIB. 

Dr S C Sharma (retd. Prof, ENT, AIIMS, Delhi) was been selected as the first NMC Chairperson for a period of three years, it said.  Besides the Chairperson, NMC will have 10 ex-officio members that include Presidents of the four Autonomous Boards, 

 In addition, NMC will have 10 nominees from Vice Chancellors of Health Universities from States/UTs, 9 nominees from State Medical Councils, and three expert members from diverse professions, it added.
