Dream big and think big, Prof Kannan to students

DIMAPUR, SEPT 28 (MExN): Pfutsero College marked its 24th Freshers’ and Parting Social on September 27 at its college auditorium with Prof K Kanaan, Vice Chancellor, Nagaland University gracing the occasion as the Chief Guest. The occasion was celebrated amidst joy owing to the college being accorded Degree Examination Centre by order on September 8. The up-gradation of the college has been affected after the appointment of the new Vice Chancellor.

Professor Kanaan in his address acknowledged that being the Vice Chancellor of Nagaland University is a challenge which he hoped to live up to. Encouraging the students to dream big, think big and look for opportunities to make their contribution to the society, he said that being located in a rural area, Pfutsero students should not think that they are any lesser. Rather demand the best and be dedicated in their interests by setting aside maximum time for practice, which will take them to a high level of perfection.

Drawing examples from famous millionaires, Kannan said that mental peace and truth are very important to the students while at the same time setting ‘goals’ and not wavering from these ‘goals’, which can be seen in the lives of the tycoons. Encouraging the students to demand the best from the University, Kannan said that he would do his best to ensure that development comes to the college and hoped that a suitable “model” would be established which would make Pfutsero College independent in its own way.  The Professor appreciated the “great society” and said that it should make the people and particularly the students’ community, to work harder to excel in academics. This is the first visit he has made to a college which is situated in a rural area and he was hopeful and eager to be present at the Silver Jubilee celebrations slated to be held next year.

Also, exhorting the students, K Therie, MLA, 16 Pfutsero A/C, who also holds Chairmanship of Pfutsero College welcomed the Chief Guest and expressed his hope and optimism the Prof Kanaan would produce a ‘change’ in Nagaland University and that he would be instrumental in bridging the gap in the rural-urban scenario.

Saying that students from rural areas are not able to go for higher education in urban settings owing to economic factors, most of them are forced to remain in the rural areas to purse their higher education. “If these students have commitment and are given equal infrastructure, opportunity, staff, etc., they are no less than those who study in urban areas and can rise and challenge the world intellectually. “The best of the best have the best, so the students should be committed and strive to be the best,” K Therie stated. He also stressed on the importance of moral and spiritual virtues in the attitude of youngsters and lauded the students for keeping the college free from anti-social activities. He hoped that they would continue in that direction.

Expressing his gratitude and appreciation to the teaching staff and the faculty for keeping Pfutsero College alive through 24 years of struggle and hardships, he announced a salary revision with effect from September 1, 2006.

Principal of the college Lalboi Singsit, presented the college report for the last 2 years. Terming the 24 years journey of the college as victorious years,he expressedsadness at the sight of the present condition of the college campus adding that there was a feeling of being left unattended by the parent bodies . On this, the principal called for a “softer approach” to the institutions in rural areas in meeting with UGC standards, which he hoped would usher in development.
