Finally the people of Mokokchung got its own modern market complex at the town which was inaugurated by Minister for Urban Development, Dr Shurhozelie Liezietsu here today in the presence of the district administration, Ao Senden, AKM, officials from the Urban Development and many others.

The Rs 21.94 crore project commenced work on November 2, 2006 and was completed on June 22, 2010. The nicely-built modern market complex which occupies a total plinth area of 7023 sqm, boasts of marble floors, modern lighting system, translucent plastic roof over the main lobby, a parking lot in the basement and the whole complex has 118 ‘stalls’. The complex also has office rooms, a conference hall, lounge, a pantry and services room.

“This was the dream of the department (Urban Development),” said Dr M Toshimanen, Director Urban Development who chaired the inaugural programe. He commented that the government, with this multi-crore project, has turned the Mokokchung Market complex into one of the most prestigious building not only in Nagaland but also in India.

With the inauguration of the new market complex, shoppers in Mokokchung can finally shop in a modern building, and feel proud of a modern marketing complex in the middle of the town. The complex will be managed by a managing committee with the Deputy Commissioner as the Chairman and the Mokokchung Municipal Council chairman as the vice-chairman. Twenty percent of the revenue from the complex will go towards the maintenance of the complex, while the remaining eighty percent will go to the MMC fund.

“This is indeed one of the prestigious projects of the Department,” said Dr Shurhozelie after inaugurating the complex, “Over the last few years, the Department has been taking up projects in almost all parts of the State both under Central as well as State-sponsored programmes.”

Saying that there is a need to device more scientific approach to ‘development management’, Dr Shurhozelie lamented that while many development works take place, such development works are short lived, for want of proper management. Therefore, he said that the new market shall now be managed as per the management guidelines - 20% of the monthly rent shall be kept aside for management and upkeep of the complex, while the rest 80% shall go as revenue to the MMC. The President of the Ao Senden, Lendinokdang while expressing happiness over the inauguration of the new complex, said that the people of Mokokchung are blessed to receive such a ‘sophisticated and magnificent market complex’. Maintaining that vision originates from the government and also the leaders, Lendinokdang asserted that the people should not fail to do justice to the concept of the government. In this regard he advised people to follow the ‘marketing cultures’ - discipline, salesmanship which does not encourage the involvement of many intermediaries. With this we can do justice to the concept of the government, he said and further urged the people to use the complex for the progress and welfare of the people.

The Deputy Commissioner of Mokokchung, Lithrongla G Chishi urged the people to regard the complex as their own and not to think of the complex as MMC building or Government building. She expressed her hope that the new market complex would make a stronger commercial hub not only for the people of Mokokchung but also for the other neighbouring districts.

The MMC Coordinator, N Bendang Jamir, while thanking the DAN Government, said that the people of Mokokchung had reached another milestone through the inauguration of the complex. The MCCI vice chairman, Lanukaba while delivering the vote of thanks, assured that the complex would be kept neat and clean. He also assured on behalf of the Mokokchung Chambers of Commerce and Industries that they will give their best cooperation to the department and the management committee of the complex in the days to come.

The contractor who built the building, Meren Zhimomi (M/s Aien Meren Enterprises) was also awarded a certificate by the Urban Development department at the function. GBs, Dobashis, and many prominent citizens attended the programme.
