Dimapur | July 29

In the wake of reports of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants pouring into Dimapur following the ethnic conflict in Bodoland, Assam, Naga Council Dimapur (NCD) has decided to intensify its drive against the illegal immigrants.

The Public Action Committee (PAC) of Naga Council at a marathon meeting convened with its affiliated tribal organizations, GBs, village council and colony chairmen, Naga Women Hoho and Dimapur Naga Students’ Union at the Council’s office Sunday afternoon, passed six resolutions relating to illegal Bangladeshi immigrants (IBI).

The house mandated the PAC to direct village and colony chairmen, GBs and youths of the 80 plus colonies and villages under NCD jurisdiction to impress upon landowners and house owners not to allow any IBI to stay in their respective colonies and villages.

PAC in the meeting chaired by its Coordinator, Joel Nillo Kath, also resolved to start a “Pledge” or signature campaign to boycott the illegal Bangladeshi immigrants socially and economically. The signature campaign will start from Naga Council office and gradually spread to all districts of Nagaland. PAC hopes to get at least 1 lakh signatures in the next six months.

Blaming IBIs for not only importing all sorts of crimes and social evils, the members were also of the view that Naga economy is now at the mercy of the IBIs.

Side by side, PAC would conduct series of workshops and seminars to revive work culture among Nagas and educate people on the pledge campaign. PAC also plans to visit churches and hold interactive sessions with the congregation to create awareness on the menace of illegal Bagladeshi migrants responsible for bringing all sorts of crimes and evils in Naga society.

In another resolution, PAC under aegis of Naga Council condemned the Naga national groups (Undergrounds) for utilizing the services of IBIs, especially in tax collection. Members in the meeting said it was unfortunate that Naga underground groups have to employ aliens for a “sacred” cause.

PAC also resolved to expand its membership by including genuine welfare unions and organizations and also “Naga Blog” members to effectively implement the drive against IBIs. Further, the house resolved that henceforth the term “illegal Bangladeshi immigrants” would be used to classify the illegal Bangladeshis or “Miyas.”

Resolutions passed unanimously

1.    PAC condemns the national workers for utilizing the services of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants (IBIs) to conduct its taxation activities.
2.    The various colony/village chairmen/GBs/youth organizations are to ensure that all remedial steps are taken to evict IBIs from their jurisdiction with the consent and co-operation of land/house owners.
3.    The membership of PAC shall be expanded to include new members, such as Presidents/chairmen of proven welfare organizations and even members/administrators of The Naga Blog (TNB) if such are willing, inorder to effectively fight the menace of IBIs.
4.    PAC shall soon start a “Pledge Campaign”, a signature campaign to arouse Naga citizens to socially and economically boycott IBIs at purely voluntary and individual level. This campaign shall be spread to all the districts of Nagaland with the help of tribal hohos and student bodies.
5.    PAC will organize a series of workshops with churches and NGOs to imbibe on the people the importance of “dignity of labour”.
6.    Henceforth, Bangladeshi Muslim migrants shall be addressed as illegal Bangladeshi immigrants keeping in mind the religious sentiment of the minority community in other parts of India or the world.
