Medziphema, October 21 (MExN): The Department of Horticulture, NU, SASRD, Medziphema Campus is organizing a Model Training Course (MTC) on flower drying techniques and arrangements from October 21 to 29 which is sponsored by the Directorate of Extension, Ministry of Agriculture Coop. and Farmers’ Welfare, Government of India, New Delhi.
Day one of the weeklong training kick started today at the Medziphema Campus (SASRD) of Nagaland University with Watienla Jamir, Director, Dept. of Horticulture, Government of Nagaland as the chief guest. Speaking on the occasion, she emphasized on the importance of dry flowers and how dry flower industry is fast emerging as a remunerative enterprise. With respect to Nagaland and the other states of North East Hill Region (NEHR), she advocated the prospect and opportunities of dry flower industry in the region as fresh flower industry (cut flower) is faced with a major constraint in terms of transportation. The region being blessed with suitable agro-climatic conditions, ideal for cultivation of various flower crops and also the region being very rich in flora (various wild flowers and plants) which can be tapped for production of valuable dry flower products makes dry flower industry a potential industry in the region.
The inaugural programme was chaired by Prof. R.C. Gupta, Dean, NU: SASRD and Prof. Akali Sema, Head and Coordinator, Dept. of Horticulture, NU: SASRD gave the prologue of the programme, followed by a special number from Imliakum & Co. and the Vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Rokolhuü Keditsu, Asst. Prof., Dept. of Horticulture, NU: SASRD. Altogether, 22 participants from Nagaland, Manipur, Assam and Mizoram have enlisted for the training.
