DUCCF urges coordination on fire safety measures

Dimapur, September 23 (MExN): The Dimapur Urban Council Chairmen Federation (DUCCF) expressed support for fire safety measures in business establishments and public spaces, while calling for clearer demarcation of enforcement roles between civic and fire authorities.

The Federation in a press release, acknowledged the importance of fire extinguishers as vital safety equipment for safeguarding lives and property. However, it emphasised that the primary responsibility for inspection, monitoring, and maintenance should lie with the Fire & Emergency Services Department, which it termed the “competent authority” with the expertise to enforce fire safety norms, conduct inspections, and provide training on fire prevention and response.

While respecting the Dimapur Municipal Council’s (DMC) concern for public safety, the DUCCF urged that enforcement be closely coordinated with the Fire Department. “This would ensure that business establishments are not unnecessarily burdened with overlapping checks and compliances from multiple agencies,” it stated. The appeal also stressed the need for a balanced approach, urging authorities to give equal attention to other pressing civic issues such as sanitation, drainage, traffic management and hygiene, which are pressing concerns for both traders and the public.

The DUCCF called for cooperation between all departments and appealed to the concerned authorities, particularly DMC and the Fire & Emergency Services Department, to streamline responsibilities and work hand in hand for the safety and welfare of the people of Dimapur.
