Dimapur, December 19 (MExN): A “Special Grants” for backward tribes students has been instituted by the Department of Underdeveloped Areas (DUDA), Nagaland which will take effect from the current academic year, the DUDA Director, Mikha Lomi informed. Students belonging to Sangtam, Konyak, Yimchunger, Phom, Khiamniungan and Chang tribes who have passed HSLC and HSSLC from schools located in the four districts of Mon, Tuensang Longleng and Kiphire will be entitled to the special grant. The grant is also for orphans or children of farmers/economically weak and children of fixed pay and work charges employees of state government can also apply. However, candidates not covered under these provisions need not apply.
DUDA has also stated that merit will be the sole criteria for selection and only persons’ with the highest total aggregate marks from the concerned tribes will be selected. DUDA intends to publish a book on historical important places of tourist interest associated with legend and folk tales of the six backward tribes. The Literature Committee of all tribes have been requested to contact the concerned department for detailed information on the same before January 30, 2009, so also for eligible students to contact their respective tribal students’ union presidents for details before the stipulated date.
