E-waste management – Capacity building for govt employees

Kohima, March 21 (MExN): Capacity building of government employees on e-waste management was organized by National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT), Kolkata at Sate Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), Kohima on March 21.  

More than 100 people from various government departments and institutions participated in the training, which was funded by Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India.  

The trainers were Er. Kopelo Letou and Angu Bahadur Khadka, IT & E-Waste Trainer, NIELIT, Kolkata.  

A press release informed that the training dealt with E-waste Management Rules 2016 which came into effect on October 1, 2016. The new E-waste Rule will bring the producer under Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). Further, the state government is required to create awareness and ensure safety, health & skill development of its employees on hazards, management and disposal of e-waste, the release stated.  

It mentioned that NIELIT, Kolkata has been able to conduct successful trainings in 10 states/ UTs with the mandate of Meit Y- GOI.  

The release explained that e-waste means electrical and electronic equipment, whole or in part, discarded as waste by the consumer. “E-wastes are considered dangerous as certain components of some electronic products contain materials that are hazardous, depending on their condition and density,” it added.  

Meanwhile, e-waste management is the management of electronics which are destined for reuse, resale, salvage, collection, recycling, or disposal. “It deals with composition of e-waste, hazardous substances in e-waste, environmental safety and health hazards of e-waste, ROHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) E-waste rules and the responsibilities of stakeholders under the rules e-waste disposal,” the release stated.
