Dimapur | March 8

In an age of enlightenment when the term gender equality has become a common catchphrase, stories and images of atrocities against women continue to haunt and mar the society today. Education and awareness is the foremost way towards removing and preventing gender-based discrimination and violence against women, asserted Bambi Kevichusa delivering the keynote address at a programme commemorating International Women’s Day in Dimapur today.

The programme was organised by We For Women at The Garden, Naga Shopping Arcade.

According to Kevichusa, who is the brand ambassador of We For Women, empowerment of women is not about women lording over men rather creating an environment where women are uplifted, enabled to contribute to the society and be appreciated. In that direction, the support of men is required, she added. On the significance of March 8, she said, “It is a day to not only celebrate womanhood but a day to reflect for women and men alike.”

Shouka Kakheto, ADCP (Crime), Dimapur Police Commissionerate, while speaking on the legal aspect of the rights of women, stated that the principle of equality of women is enshrined in the Constitution of India. Upholding the constitutional mandate, the State has enacted certain laws safeguarding the rights of women, he added. While regarding March 8 as a call to act, he said, “We all share an equal responsibility to fight for gender equality.”

A special lantern lighting ceremony was also organised to mark the occasion, besides performances from Moanungsang, 1st Naga Idol and Voices of Hope, a group led by Nise Meruno. It culminated with Ram Dhenu, a Guwahati-based live band performing a special concert.
